The PO Athinon football club was founded in Athens on February 3, 1908, when Giorgos Kalafatis along with 40 other athletes decided to leave Panellinius GS after the club’s decision to suspend his football team. The name of the club meant Football Club of Athens and the club played on the pitch at Patission Street. In November 1908 he competed in the Greek Championship under the auspices of SEAGS (Association of Greek Athletic and Gymnastics Associations).
In 1910, after a dispute among board members, Giorgos Kalafatis, with most of the players and the coach, decided to withdraw from PO Athinon and started playing on a new ground in Amerikis Square. Then the name of the club changed to Panellinios PO (Polish Panhellenski Football Club), and the colors of the club were green and white. The club participated in football tournaments under the auspices of SEAGS until 1914, until World War I did not prevent the organization of subsequent seasons.
In 1918, the club changed its name to Panellinios PAO. In 1919, after founding the Association of Football Clubs of Athens-Piraeus (EPS), he took part in local games. In 1921, the Association changed its name to Enosi Podosferikon Somation Ellados (EPSE). In the seasons 1920/21 and 1921/22 he won the EPSE tournament. In 1922, the city authorities donated the area for the new Leoforos stadium. On March 15, 1924, the club adopted its current name of Panathinaikos Athlitikos Omilos (PAO), (Polish: Pan-Athletic Athletic Club). In 1926, the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) was founded, which organized the first official Greek championship in 1927. In the 1929/30 season, the club won its first official Greek title.
In 1979, the football club separated from the Association and was transformed into an independent structure of a professional sports club.
A new crisis hit the club when, on 20 December 2010, club president Nikos Pateras resigned, for the second time in 6 months (he first resigned from the presidency in March 2010, but then returned after three months, after which full funding of the club was resumed ). However, the club’s other major shareholders refused to take over the management of the club. Nikos Pateras proposed Adamantios Polemis as president, but Ioannis Vekris was approved. In 2011, due to financial problems and management disagreements, the Board decided to reduce the budget and sell many players. In 2012, Skai TV owner Giannis Alafouzos devised a plan to sell Vardinogiannis shares (54.7%) and make them available to fans across Greece so that Panathinaikos could overcome the crisis.
