SPIRIDON LOUIS
Spiridon Louis was a Greek long-distance runner who gained fame for his victory in the first modern marathon at the Athens Olympic Games in 1896. Louis was born in 1873 in Marousi, a small village in Greece. He was a simple olive farmer who practiced running as a hobby. At the 1896 Athens Olympic Games, Spiridon Louis took part in the marathon to commemorate Pheidippides’ legendary run from Marathon to Athens to announce his victory in the Battle of Marathon. Louis was one of 17 competitors who started the race, a distance of about 40 km, which started in Marathon and finished at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Spiridon Louis surprised everyone with his incredible effort and determination, leading for most of the course. Despite his lack of experience in international running competitions, he managed to maintain his lead and triumph at the Olympic Stadium, where he was warmly welcomed by crowds of Greek fans. Louis won the gold medal, becoming a national hero and a symbol of the Olympic rebirth.

LOAANIS MELISSANIDIS
He was born in Germany and has lived in Thessaloniki since he was two. He took part in two Olympic games. In 1996 he triumphed in the free exercises. Four years later he was seventh in the jump. He was vice-world champion in the free exercises in 1994. In the team he came third in 1994. He was a medalist at the European Championships in 1994 (gold in the free exercises) and 1998 (gold in the jump, silver in the free exercises).
KONSTANDINOS KIENDERIS
In 1992 he came 6th at the Junior World Championships in Seoul in the 200 metres, and in 1993 in Narbonne he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in the 400 metres. In 1999 at the World Championships in Seville he won his 200 metres heat, beating Maurice Greene among others, but did not start the quarter-finals due to injury. A year later he became the gold medalist at the Olympic Games, also in the 200 metres. At the World Championships in Edmonton in 2001 he won the gold medal again and became one of the most recognisable athletes in the world. In 2002 he won the gold medal at the European Championships in Munich. A year later he won the European Cup in Athletics (Florence 2003), but the times he achieved were far from those of previous years. In 2004 he became national champion and was mentioned among the favorites to light the Olympic flame.
The day before the Games began, a scandal broke out – Kienderis (together with top Greek sprinter Ekaterini Tanu) failed to show up for a doping test. To cover up the incident, they faked a motorcycle accident, but the IAAF disqualified the Greek athletes. In 2011, he was found guilty by a Greek court of giving false testimony in connection with an alleged motorcycle accident in 2004.
VOULA PATOULIDOU
Voula Patoulidou is a Greek athlete who won the gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Patoulidou was born in 1965 in Greece and began her sports career as a hurdler. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Voula Patoulidou was one of the surprise winners, as she was not considered a favorite to win gold. In the final of the 100 metres hurdles, Patoulidou surprised her rivals and the crowd by beating them all and winning the first ever Greek gold in this event. Nikolaos Kaklamanakis is a Greek sailor who won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Pyrros Dimas is a Greek weightlifter who is considered one of the best weightlifters in history. He was born in 1971 in Albania, but represented Greece during his sports career. He is a four-time Olympic champion and multiple world champion in weightlifting. Dimas made his Olympic debut at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the featherweight category.
